Tax Accountants of SG, would you recommend a Tax career to upcoming fresh grads?

Main Post:

Hi everyone, I'm an upcoming NTU accountancy fresh grad who is having some anxiety over the future right now. I've heard Tax is very specialized and was advised to go the audit route multiple times but really found audit is not for me. I am okay with Tax, not very excited about it but I don't dread it at the same time. My regret was only pursuing auditing and tax internships during my time in school which has landed me in this predicament.

For those who have a career in Tax, do you mind elaborating more on your career and whether you have managed to find job satisfaction? Thanks for everyone's time!

Tax accountants, are you satisfied with your career in terms of the work itself?

I spend my day corresponding with clients, answering questions, training staff, reviewing returns, researching and explaining issues, and occasionally still preparing a return. I'm quite happy with all the work I do, particularly when it's focused on client relationships/education and employee development. I also get a healthy dose of enjoyment out of filling in forms, developing/following procedures, and creating well-put together workpapers which made being a staff accountant enjoyable.

The only dissatisfaction I've had in all my years working in tax has come down to people. It's either a crappy client or an awful staff/manager/shareholder that makes the work challenging.

Does anyone know a good online tax accountants

How complex is your tax?

Even if you have share disbursements/dividends most, if not all, of it will pre-fill in the ATOs free option. Then you just put in your deductions.

If you're paying less than $500 for a return, the tax agent is just using the pre-fill data too. You just have to wait a bit for the pre-fill to show up.

Have a crack at least, you can get an estimate before actually lodging. If you don't feel confident you can still take it to a tax agent.

Looking for recommendations for tax accountants for taxes in Sweden

Main Post:

Hej alla!

I might be switching to a foreign stock broker this year because Avanza, etc. are pretty limited when trading in US stock exchange (I am not a US citizen btw). I want to make sure that taxes get filed properly here in Sweden. Does anyone have recommendation for good tax accountants/service? Do I need to hire them for the entire year or just for 3-4 months near the tax declaration season? How much do they usually charge?

Tack!

Top Comment: I just moved from the US and I'm using Schwab. My understanding is their international account should work just fine (I am in the process of transitioning my US account), but I believe you may have to get tax assistance with exporting trades so that they're filed properly with Skatteverket as they don't do the actual filing with the agency. Also looked into Interactive Brokers but the same reporting issue is likely to pop up (importing transactions/taxable gains/losses/etc).

Why I should go into tax

Main Post:

Just graduated from university with a degree in accounting and Starting a tax graduate role in autumn. Was this a good decision? Benefits of tax over audit ?

Top Comment: If you like tax and are good at it, you will be employed forever and make good money. It also gives you the most opportunity if you want to start your own firm.

Why do people work as tax accountants in public accounting?

Main Post:

I don't get it. Audit is bad, but a lot of people only put up with it for a couple of years, have something nice to put on the resume and move on to nice, well-paid corporate accounting jobs with sane hours and lower stress levels.

Tax is a lot more limited. They work insane hours for months in spring and fall, the pay isn't that great until the manager level and above, and it's easy to get stuck doing tax work. Many firms don't pay overtime either.

Why do people do it? There are plenty of well-paying 40 hours per week corporate jobs out there with occasional overtime, but not the grueling sweatshop stuff that is common in public accounting.

Top Comment: There are just different opportunities. Many tax pros move on to opening their own practice and work for themselves or buy into a partnership at a smaller firm. Once you have knowledge of medium and small business you can do tax consulting, which pays well.

Why don't people like to go into tax?

Main Post: Why don't people like to go into tax?

Top Comment: Plenty of people want to go into tax. It's guaranteed work. What people don't like is getting pigeonholed. It's hard to leave when your only experience is in tax because HR doesn't see how it relates to anything else that isn't specifically tax.

To all of the new accounting grads, DO NOT take a role in tax unless you want to do tax for the rest of your life.

Main Post:

I'm a CPA with 10 years of experience doing tax and I'm super burnt out. I want to switch from tax to a normal internal accounting role, but companies won't even look at my resume because I wasn't an auditor. They lie and tell you in school or when you first start your job that it doesn't matter, but if you go tax you'll only be "qualified" to do tax unless you take a massive paycut/start over in your career. Sure, you can take a role in corporate tax or even a family office if you want to get out of public, but you'll still be doing tax. I'm sure that there will be a few success stories in the comments talking about how they made the transition, but I've never met anyone who did it successfully and I know many who have tried.

Top Comment: You might need to apply at lesser known and smaller companies and then work your way up. There are tons of accounting manager roles out there.
